in Madrid´s Guadarrama

Sierra Mountains, as we

recreate two of La Vuelta's

most mythical stages

In 2015, during La Vuelta's next to the final stage in Madrid, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin headed confidently into the decisive last high-mountain stage, holding on to a hard-fought 6-second lead to then second-placed Italian Fabio Aru.

Cycling fans of La Vuelta were about to live one of the race's most memorable stages in recent memory. When the dust settled after an unforgettable day of riding in Madrid’s Guadarrama Sierra Mountains, Aru's great display of climbing prowess, spurred by a superb tactical performance from his Astana team, managed to knock off Dumoulin from the overall lead and claim the title of Vuelta winner all to himself.

In 1985, former Tour de France winner Pedro (Perico) Delgado trailed then Vuelta leader Scotsman Robert Millar by more than 6 minutes, heading into the Guadarrama Sierra Mountains stage, once again scheduled on the last to the final day of competition.

Delgado took advantage of Millar's confidence of his ample lead to lead a breakaway that would go into the annals of La Vuelta's cycling history. Two Guadarrama Sierra Mountains climbs later, he arrived at the finish line having made up Millar’s 6.13ms lead on him and, in the end, claiming his first overall Vuelta win with a 36-second margin over a devastated Millar.
